PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A new scam tracker is available online after the Better Business Bureau (BBB) compiled the top scams affecting Rhode Island, Eastern Massachusetts, Maine, and Vermont last month.

According to the BBB recent reports have found if you live in Rhode Island or southeastern Massachusetts, scammers are most likely to try to get to you by calling and claiming to be tax or debt collectors.

In many reports, scammers claiming to be collecting taxes will threaten with lawsuits, arrests, and jail time if immediate payment is not received.

Officials from BBB advise consumers to never wire money or send prepaid debit cards to scammers claiming to be from the IRS.

The IRS recommends calling them 1-800-366-4484 to determine if the caller is legitimate.

BBB’s Scam Tracker is absolutely free for consumers and businesses.
