PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Arbor Day Foundation and Rhode Island’s environmental agency are giving away free trees.

The state Department of Environmental Management (DEM) says 1,000 trees will be given away to homeowners as part of a program to help conserve energy.

Janet Coit, Director of the DEM, says the agency ran the same program last year, and all the trees were spoken for within the first 24 hours.

Coit says trees are a great way to reduce utility expenses, and help promote a healthier environment.

Registration for the program opens on Sept. 12.

Trees may be picked up at specific farmers’ markets in October.
