It was not the Labor Day weekend many were hoping for in Narragansett. Down at the beach, waves were coming in at around 8 to 10 feet high. During the morning high tide, waves crashed right onto the shore where many people were standing to watch.
With the growing tide expected through out the day, as well as the harsh rip tide, the town did not take chances, and closed the beach. 12 lifeguards were on duty today to make sure everyone stayed out of the water.
"It’s something we’re very concerned about, because riptides are very dangerous and it’s actually very dangerous for lifeguards too. So we’re trying to side on the area of caution and not let anyone in the water," says Steve Wright, Narragansett Parks and Recreation Director.
Monday, was the first time this summer Narragansett has close the beach it also happens to be the last day of the season they man the beach with staff including lifeguards.
