It was a scary situation for people inside a Massachusetts apartment building Wednesday night.

Six people were hospitalized for high levels of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in Watertown. Of them, three were children.

A resident called the landlord after smelling a strange odor in the basement.

Firefighters found high levels of CO in the building and soon after evacuated it.

“They were up in the 80-90 range. Anything about 3 is elevated so 90’s pretty high,” said Chief Rob Iannetta of the Watertown Fire Department.

Residents were able to return home around 9:45 p.m. and those hospitalized are expected to recover.
