Due to fiscal budget cuts, the Attleboro Police Department has laid-off eight crossing guards for the 2016-2017 school year.

As a result, eight crossing locations for school children will no longer be staffed by crossing guards.

These crossing locations include:

  1. Newport Avenue at Roy Avenue
  2. South Main Street at Locust Street
  3. Oakhill Avenue at Hyman Fine School
  4. Elizabeth Street at Water Street
  5. James Street at Brownell Street
  6. Hodges Street at Waston Avenue
  7. Handy Street at Hyman Fine School
  8. Locust Street at Hickory Road

Officials suggest that parents and guardians establish a safety plan for their children who walk to school. In addition, police encourage parents to speak to their child about the dangers of distracted drivers such as people who may not see them trying to cross the street.

Police say children walk to and from school during the busiest travel times of the day, which increases risks.
