Red Cross helps families left homeless after fire

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After a fire Friday on Bergen St, in Providence, The American Red Cross is helping three families who were left homeless.
The Red Cross is helping to meet the families’ immediate needs by providing comfort kits containing personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant; shaving supplies and other items a resident might not have been able to gather in the rush to escape the fire.
The affected families were given recovery envelopes containing information that will help them recover after the fire, and will meet with Red Cross caseworkers in the coming days to work on a longer-term recovery plan.
Fire crews responded to 44 Bergen Street after a fire broke out just after 1 p.m. Friday afternoon.
Upon arrival crews found the second floor unit in flames, and that there was extensive interior damage.
Everyone was able to get out, including a dog.
The Red Cross is able to provide assistance through the generosity of donors.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
