NEWPORT, R.I. – A Rhode Island woman is facing charges after her 19-year-old friend died from a heroin overdose in the woman’s apartment.
Newport Police confirmed that 21-year-old Khadijah Cooper was arrested following the death of the Middletown woman on July 15.
Cooper is charged with failing to provide assistance and obstructing police.
She pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor charges, and was released on personal recognizance.
Detectives say Cooper admitted calling a drug dealer to get drugs for her friend, and a text message on Cooper’s phone indicated her friend wouldn’t wake up and that Cooper went to bed without calling 911.
A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Aug. 17.
