Police: Body Found in Olneyville Section of Providence Had Been Moved There

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Police said Tuesday that a body found in the Olneyville section of Providence was likely moved to the location where it was found.

Construction crews found the body around 9 a.m. Monday on Magnolia Street near Troy Street.

According to Providence Police Major David Lapatin, the death is a homicide.

The victim is identified as 34-year-old Augusto Alonzo Cortez of Providence. He had not been in touch with his family in a few days.

In a news conference on Tuesday, Major Lapatin said he believes Cortez had been killed in one location, and then his body was moved to the Olneyville location.

Major Lapatin said the body was not buried, but did have an object on top of it.  He said the body had not been there long but he would not specify how long.

The cause of death has not been released.

Major Lapatin said he does not think there is a threat to the public and does not think gang affiliation was involved.

No arrests have been made yet, but Major Lapatin said the investigation is going well.

This is a developing story, more information will be added as it becomes available.
