RI’s first ever ‘refill station, wellness shop’ aims to curb waste

PAWTUCKET, RI (WLNE) – Monday is the 25th Annual “America Recycles Day,” and a first of its kind local shop is doing its part to help reduce waste. Located on Smithfield Avenue in Pawtucket, The Heal Room aims to do that one product at a time.

“We want people to come here and understand that they can live a lifestyle that is low waste or that is harmonious with themselves or the planet,” Heal Room co-owner, Ana Duque told ABC 6 News.

Duque co-owns The Heal Room with Karen Mejias. They both grew up in Pawtucket and have been friends since high school. The concept of their shop is simple, bring in empty jars and fill them up with everything from shampoo and conditioner to laundry detergent.

“We’re two women. We’re raised in Pawtucket, also 2 immigrant women, born in our own countries,” Duque said. “We are very proud of that. (That) we just aren’t minority, but we brought this elevation, healing space to our community. So we’re extremely proud of that.”
