Large fire now out at Smithfield junkyard; over 100 cars caught fire
SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) – A fire at a Smithfield junkyard is now out. Crews cleared the scene at “Five Star Auto Salvage and Sales” around 2 a.m. Tuesday.
On Monday night, Smithfield Emergency Management confirmed that they were working to contain a fire at a junkyard on Douglas Pike. They said it took an hour to get set up for the operation. They used a drone to see the extent of the fire.
Fire crews said over 100 cars were ignited in the fire, according to Deputy State Fire Marshal James Given.
Some cars still had fuel in them, which caused the fire to grow and spread so quickly.
Given said that the crews have a long day ahead of them. They’ll be looking through damage and interviewing business owners.
Crews will also be looking for the source of the fire.
Douglas Pike was closed off from Providence Pike to North Smithfield town line while crews fought the fire.
Town Manager Randy Rossi spoke to ABC6 News on scene Monday night saying, “the fire department is cornering the fire from all sides”
