LINCOLN, R.I. (WLNE) — Lincoln Police said a mother from Foster is facing charges for leaving her infant in her truck during sweltering heat.

On Aug. 4 Lincoln Police said they responded to calls of an unattended baby left inside of a truck at the Lincoln Mall.

When police arrived they said they found an infant in the truck that was turned off, with the passenger side window cracked a quarter inch and all the doors locked.

Police said the outside temperature was 81 degrees and it was 84 degrees inside the truck.

The officers attempted to locate a related adult before breaking into the truck, police said. They eventually determined it necessary to break in to ensure the safety of the baby.

The infant was safely removed from the truck and taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital for further evaluation.

Police said 55-year-old Lorrie Carter of Foster eventually approached the officers and admitted to leaving the 7-month-old infant in the car while she went shopping.

Carter claimed she had been gone for 20 minutes and thought leaving the window slightly cracked was good enough, and that she did not believe she did anything wrong, according to Police.

Carter was taken into custody by Lincoln police, and charged with cruelty or neglect of a child.
