A Shooting Star on Good Morning Providence!

CAUGHT ON CAMERA: If you were watching the 5 AM hour of Good Morning Providence, you may have had a front row seat for a special treat as a shooting star crossed our Richmond Preserve camera!

Shooting stars, or meteors, are essentially “space junk”– pieces of rock or debris that enter earth’s atmosphere and burn up as they do. This particular shooting star is one of many in the Geminid Meteor Shower, which began November 19 and will end December 24. The Geminid Meteor Shower is an annual meteor shower that generally happens in December as earth’s orbit guides us into the path of debris left by the asteroid Phaethon.

This year, the peak of the Geminids will be December 13-14. In areas of low light pollution, it’ll be possible to see more than 50 meteors per hour! Don’t forget to go outside, and look up!
