A wet start to the holiday weekend

Friday Forecast

We’ll see a good deal of clouds today with a passing midday shower for eastern CT / western RI. By the afternoon there will be some breaks of sun and it will be a muggy day as well while highs climb into the low 70s. Clouds and fog return tonight, but we will stay dry for any high school football games.

Saturday will mark the 5th Saturday in a row with at least some rain, dating back to early September:
9/9 –  Trace (not measurable)
9/16 – 0.03″
9/23 – 0.39″
9/30 – 0.36″

As far as how much we will receive this time, that has yet to be determined, but it does look like much of the state will check in with 1/4 to 1/2 inch of rain. Rain totals of 1.5 to 2.5 inches will be found in CT and another maxima out toward the cape that could reach near an inch. A slow-moving cold front will approach from the west, while moisture from offshore Tropical Storm Philippe (or what’s left of it by tomorrow night) will interact with the front into Saturday.

A few of our short-term models try to spin some brief heavy rain from Philippe in on Saturday afternoon, which could cause for brief localized street flooding. We will continue to monitor this possibility. Some wind and wave action is possible for Cape Cod and the Islands starting tomorrow night, so expect at least a Small Craft Advisory to get issued.

The rain clears out of here Saturday night and Sunday will be a bright but windy while turning noticeably cooler with highs around 60°, a far cry from the 70s and 80s of the past few days! Columbus Day Monday will give us a bit of a fall chill starting off in the 40s and only recovering to the upper 50s in the afternoon despite a fair amount of sunshine.
