ABC6 WeatherLab – Lightning Safety

With Lightning Safety Awareness Week upon us, it’s time to re-visit some lightning safety do’s and don’ts. First the DO’s. You DO want to get inside a building if there’s lightning in the area. You DO want to get in a car if there is no building available. The rubber tires offer good protection if there’s a lightning strike nearby. And you DO want to unplug your home computer to protect it from lightning damage during a t-storm.
Now the DON’T’s. DON’T stand under a tall object like a tree or pole, as lightning is attracted to tall objects. DON”T go golfing or swimming during a t-storm, as both of those activities are putting you in grave danger during a t-storm. And DON’T use the shower or telephone in your house during a t-storm, as you increase your risk of injury if there’s a lightning strike nearby.
