PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The House of Representatives will vote Thursday on a controversial bill to codify abortion protections in Rhode Island state law.
The bill would enshrine Roe v. Wade into state law, protecting Rhode Island womens’ right to abortion.
The divisive bill has prominent Rhode Island lawmakers on both sides. Governor Gina Raimondo has stated that she supports the proposal, while House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello has said he will vote no.
The House Judiciary Committee approved the bill in a narrow 9-7 vote Tuesday evening to move the matter to a full floor vote.
The Senate Judiciary Committee is hearing similar legislation, but have not yet moved it to a vote.
