Affordable housing development in Providence breaks ground

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Mayor Brett Smiley, Sen. Jack Reed, and House Speaker Joseph Shekarchi joined nonprofit ONE Neighborhood Builders to break ground on a new affordable housing development in Providence.
The development on Atwells Avenue will construct 39 new affordable units as well as the preservation of 46 units already in the Elmwood neighborhood.
“The key to addressing the ongoing housing crisis impacting Providence and communities across the nation is to support the development of new housing units at every price point in every neighborhood,” Smiley said.
The nonprofit said funds for the project come from local, state, and federal leaders including the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program, a congressional appropriation through Sen. Reed, state and federal funds administered via RIHousing, and the City of Providence’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund.
