Attorney general investigates death of man restrained by Cranston police, fire departments

CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office said Monday that it’s investigating the death of a man placed in restraints during an incident last week.
The incident happened Thursday at the Econo Lodge on New London Avenue in Cranston.
Attorney General Peter Neronha’s office said Cranston police responded to a call for an individual in need for medical assistance.
“At some point during the interaction, police assisted fire personnel by restraining the individual,” said Brian Hodge, a spokesperson for the attorney general’s office.
The man, whose name wasn’t immediately released, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital by ambulance and was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital.
“As a result, the Cranston police, in accordance with the Attorney General’s protocol, informed the Attorney General’s office and the Rhode Island State Police,” said Hodge.
The attorney general’s office said Cranston police and Rhode Island State Police are also investigating the incident.
