Hundreds of New Englanders dealt with serious train delays Sunday after Amtrak experienced a signal issue.
Amtrak Police in Providence say the station was packed all morning and into the afternoon, full of passengers waiting for their train.
Amtrak citing a signal issue as the problem that caused delays on all inbound and outbound trains between Boston and New Haven. Throughout the morning, trains were unable to arrive to or depart from South Station, creating a domino effect of back-ups throughout the region.
Amtrak’s dispatching system was down so switches for trains were being manually pulled.
One rider ABC6 spoke to said the timing of the signal issue was unsettling given the fact that the Boston Marathon is Monday and many of the train riders were headed to the city for the race.
"I’m a little nervous, a little nervous about it. Um, it’s difficult you know we’ve had some serious events occur in Boston as you well know. There was the bombing so I think that for people it would be really difficult,” said Amtrak passenger Thelma Costello.
Amtrak says they have solved the problem and passengers may see residual delays.
