For years Captain Anthony Days of Mattapoisett and Lieutenant Scott Carola of New Bedford have had their artistic side hidden behind their badges. That is no longer the case. Their artwork is currently on display in a new exhibit at the UMASS College of Visual and Performing Arts in downtown New Bedford.
The showcase is meant to give police officers, fire fighters, EMT’s and corrections officers the opportunity to change the way people interpret a ‘brush with the law.’
“Most people just can not correlate the two and sometimes I find that frustrating because it’s part of my personal life. Everybody in uniform has a personal side and I think in society that gets over looked sometimes,” said Capt. Days.
The exhibit is called “March of the Unwavering.” Lt. Carola hopes that by putting the talents of first responders out there that the public will look at people in his profession a little differently.
“I think as police officers it’s really important for us to always keep in mind that we shouldn’t stereotype people when we see them. It’s very important for us to not do that. And likewise I think that maybe things like this help us to get that back in return,” he said.
Having their paintings and sketches on display is already doing more for these local members of the law enforcement then they could ever have imagined.
“I used to think I was an odd ball in a world where people don’t do these things and now I’m realizing that there are a lot of other people that serve that have the same interests and it’s very empowering when you find that out,” said Capt. Days.
An artist reception will be held this Thursday, March 10th at 6 o’clock. The event is free and the public is invited to attend. The show is open now until March 17th.
