As wintry weather ends this evening, bone-chilling cold moves in
Single-digit wind chills are likely overnight into Wednesday morning
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — After picking up a quick 2-4″ Tuesday morning, the snow changed over to sleet and rain across the area.
This may have helped the roads become less slippery in the interim, but it will be problematic as we head into tonight with colder air on the way.
Icy conditions are possible tonight on untreated roadways, as liquid will refreeze across the area. Sub-freezing temperatures will start in northwestern Rhode Island and gradually spread south and east through the evening. Please use caution when traveling!
Wind chills overnight will bottom out in the single-digits as a brisk northwest wind kicks up. Despite the sunshine on Wednesday, temperatures will struggle to even get close to the freezing mark.
Quiet weather continues Thursday but with a bit more cloud cover. On Friday, skies will be mostly overcast with the chance of snow during the p.m. hours as a coastal storm attempts to form.
At this point, all indications are that it will remain mostly offshore as it forms, leading to limited accumulations, but we will be keeping a close eye on it here in the weather center.
A dry weekend will once again be accompanied by dangerously cold air – daytime highs in the 20s, overnight lows in the teens and wind chills even colder than that.
