Assisted suicide, other healthcare-related bills to be discussed at Rhode Island State House

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Senate Judiciary Committee is meeting Tuesday to review several healthcare-related bills.

On that list is the Lila Manfield Insley Compassionate Care Act, which would allow a terminally ill patient to choose to end their life with physician allowed medications.

Another bill would allow electronic monitoring of residents’ rooms in nursing homes and assisted living facilities if they consent in writing.

The committee is also discussing a bill that would make statements of sympathy by a healthcare provider inadmissible in court as an admission of fault.

Meanwhile, the Health and Human Services Committee is also meeting today and will vote on a bill that would eliminate prior authorization or step therapy for HIV prevention drugs.

The committee will also discuss a proposal to cap costs for the most expensive prescription drugs by importing them from Canada.

They will also hear a bill aimed at regulating pharmacy benefit managers’ policies and practices to eliminate discriminatory practices.
