ATTLEBORO, MA (WLNE): Since Paul Heroux has been the Mayor in Attleboro, he said one of his top complaints is speeding. He is trying to solve this problem by putting speed humps on certain side streets.

May Street is one of the many streets the Mayor receives complaints about.

For the last 13 years, Deborah Messier has lived on May Street in Attleboro. She is getting more frustrated by all of the drivers cutting through from Newport Avenue to Route 1.

“It is absolutely horrible,” Messier said. “It is absolutely crazy. It is jam-packed.”

According to the Southeastern Regional Planning and Economic Development District, over 6,000 cars use May Street every day. Many of those drivers are not obeying the speed limit.

Mayor Paul Heroux believes that speed humps on these cut-through roads will help reduce speeding. To have the speed hump installed, the street needs to meet certain standards.

“They have to me 30 miles per hour or less,” Heroux said. “It has to be a cut-through street. It can’t be a main street.”

The proposal needs to pass the City Council. If the Council were to pass it,  residents would have to contact the mayor’s office if they were interested in a speed hump on their street.

“The government will not be able to just put speed humps wherever they want,” Heroux said. “We would first get input from the residents.”

A public hearing will be held on August 20th for residents to express any concerns or voice their opinion.
