Authorities arrest 2 suspects accused of detonating fireworks inside Harvard Medical School building

BOSTON, Mass. (WLNE) — Authorities have arrested the two suspects accused of detonating fireworks inside a building on Harvard Medical School’s campus on Nov. 1, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts.

18-year-old Logan David Patterson, of Plymouth, and 20-year-old Frank Cardoza, of Bourne, were arrested on Tuesday and charged with one count of conspiracy to damage, by means of an explosion.

According to the USAO, surveillance video captured two men walking towards the Harvard campus and lighting “what appeared to be roman candle fireworks” around 2:24 a.m.

About 10 minutes later, Patterson and Cardoza were allegedly seen climbing a scaffolding next to the Goldenson Building.

Around 2:45 a.m. a fire alarm notified campus police of an explosion on the fourth floor of the building, where officials determined a “large, commercial firework” was detonated inside a wooden locker in the research laboratory, according to the USAO.

According to the USAO, between 2:45 a.m. and 2:50 a.m., footage allegedly captured Patterson and Cardoza on the fifth floor of the building and then fleeing out of the first-floor emergency exit.

The two then fled the scene in two different directions.

The USAO said Cardoza was later caught on surveillance video around 2:57 a.m. removing his pants and placing them in a trash bin.

Around 3:40 a.m., Patterson and Cardoza met up with another individual at the Wentworth Institute of Technology campus, and walked towards the Massachusetts College of Art and Design campus around 3:50 a.m., where Patterson allegedly removed his sweatshirt and sweatpants.

On Tuesday morning, the two defendants were arrested.

Patterson and Cardoza are expected to be arraigned in federal court in Boston on Tuesday.

The incident remains under investigation.
