Beckwith Middle School in Rehoboth earns national recognition for Unified Sports program

REHOBOTH, Mass. (WLNE) — Beckwith Middle School in Rehoboth celebrated earning Special Olympics national banner recognition Wednesday.

Former Beckwith student Ethan Sammis was there for the ceremony and said he’s participated in Unified Sports for eight years.

“My favorite part is being with everybody, getting to meet new people and having the chance to communicate with the staff,” Sammis said.

Carol Jerauld coordinates the Unified program and played a major role in starting the ‘Beckwith Believers’ team back in 2017.

“I never knew how it would change my life,” Jerauld said. “Coaching Unified Sports is in a league of its own.”

Jerauld and the Beckwith Unified program are credited by the Department of Education for their “commitment to providing inclusive sports and activities for students with and without disabilities.”

“Not only do the players improve, but they help me become a better coach and person,” Jerauld said. “Now the glass is always full.”

Sammis said the program also changes the lives of the athletes.

“They can learn professional development skills, encouragement, and how to help people when they need it,” he said.

Athletes and coaches expressed that Unified Sports are more than just an opportunity to compete, they’re about building confidence and friendships for years to come.
