Biden, Harris address nation in victory speech
WILMINGTON, Del. (WLNE) — Joe Biden and Kamala Harris addressed the nation for the first time as President-Elect and Vice President-Elect on Saturday night, but they face the daunting task of bringing calm and unity in a bitterly divided moment.
“I am humbled by the trust and confidence you placed in me,” Biden said during the speech.
Thanks to a lead in his home state of Pennsylvania, ABC News projects him to win the presidency.
His running mate Kamala Harris called him with the news Saturday.
“We did it, Joe,” she said. “You’re going to be the next President or the United States.”
Biden’s team released this video with the line “A country for all Americans, a future for all Americans,” and a tweet saying Biden will “be a president for all Americans – whether you voted for me or not.”
That message central in their address to the nation tonight:
“They are not our enemies, they are Americans,” Biden said of those who voted for President Trump. “This is the time to heal in America.”
And in-becoming the first woman and woman of color elected to serve as vice president, Harris said she is hoping to inspire younger generations.
“We the people have the power to build a better future,” she said.
President Trump did not concede Saturday, but tweeted that he won 71 million legal votes, and making election fraud claims that Twitter is flagging as “disputed.”
Trump’s legal team is also mounting challenges the results.
“This is eventually going to be a big case,” said Trump’s legal advisor Rudy Giuliani, “because it will eventually go beyond Pennsylvania.”
Despite those legal challenges, President-Elect Biden says he plans to get right to work Monday with a plan for addressing the pandemic.
