Providence, R.I. — It was not the story book ending most Red Sox fans were hoping for.

The Sox fell to the Cleveland Indians at Fenway to end their ALDS run and also closing out Big Papi’s career.

It was an emotional night at Fenway Park, not only because it was the end of the Red Sox season, but also because it was the end of an historic career for David Ortiz.

Big Papi came out for one final emotional curtain call as fans stayed in their seats at Fenway Park, cheering for Ortiz and refusing to leave until they got a final look at the slugger.

With a standing ovation from the fans, Ortiz was emotional; tears streamed down his face as he acknowledged the crowd at Fenway one final time.

“I started thinking: I had my moment once I started walking to the mound.  Started looking around, and that moment that hits you when you won’t be performing all this, no disrespect to anyone but I think we have the best fans worldwide.  It kind of hit me a little bit; I’m not going to lie to you.  Like I say, I was trying to hold my emotions the most I can, that last second, I couldn’t hold them anymore.”

The outcome of the game was not the storybook ending anyone would have wanted for David Ortiz, but it is the culmination of an impressive career that will likely take him to Cooperstown.

Locally, fans were holding out until the bitter end and were glued to TV sets in bars across the city.

At Snookers, fans echoed frustration throughout the game.

ABC6 asked some fans what they thought of Big Papi’s final game and how they are handling the loss.

Some fans say, while they are disappointed by the Sox’s loss, they look forward to focusing their attention on the New England Patriots.
