BLM RI organizations host breakfast with police chiefs

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Black Lives Matter Rhode Island and Rhode Island Police Chiefs came together today for a breakfast meeting filled with insightful conversations.

BLM RI and the state’s police chiefs said they are breaking bread in an effort to “build stronger relationships and foster understanding.”

“The goal is to talk to those who can make decisions and to be at the table for these crucial discussions,” a BLM representative said.

The gathering focused on addressing issues affecting multiple communities and working to strengthen the ties that bind them.

Black Lives Matter Rhode Island PAC said that it is unaffiliated with the organization that took part in the meeting and mentioned the removal of the “George Floyd Litmus Test” that was removed from the Law Enforcement Officer’s Bill of Rights that was passed earlier in the year.

“As a police chief and as a community member, I understand the social challenges we face in urban inner cities, and I’m pleased with the progress I’ve seen over the past 31 years,” Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said.

Both groups added that they plan to keep the conversations going, hoping to create a safer and more united community.
