BLOCK ISLAND, R.I. — Residents on Block Island will become the first in the United States to exclusively get their power from wind turbines.

The five deepwater wind turbines will be switched on just after 6 a.m. Monday morning, which will power the island completely with wind technology.

Deepwater Wind, which built the five turbines for $300 million, says it will power 17,000 homes with the energy bought by National Grid.
