University of Rhode Island Press Release
KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island’s offense jumped out to the early lead, but the defense came up with several plays in the second half to rally as the annual Blue-White game ended in a 91-91 draw.
The offense played it’s best football of camp, taking the opening possession 65 yards on 14 plays for a touchdown. On the next possession, the offense again put together a 14-play drive that moved the ball 50 yards to set up a field goal attempt, which was blocked by the defense. On the first two possessions, the offense was 2-of-6 on third downs, but a perfect 3-for-3 on fourth down plays.
The offense responded to the blocked kick by marching 65 yards for its second touchdown of the day, a 1-yard plunge by Markey Clarke.
After three long drives by the offense, the defense produced consecutive three-and-out stands, the second of which ended with a blocked punt.
The back-and-fourth action continued throughout the game. While the offense scored six touchdowns and added one field goal, the defense had three interceptions, one fumble recovery and seven sacks on the day.
“I’m elated. I am thrilled with the way the whole game came out,” head coach Jim Fleming said. “The offense took advantage of some opportunities and put some points on the board. Defensively, guys stepped up and made big plays.
“The fundamental improvement at each position has been very noticeable. The players are understanding our schemes a lot better. There has been remarkable improvement in several areas.”
