Body-worn camera footage of Connecticut State Police-involved shooting released

STONINGTON, C.T. (WLNE) — The State of Connecticut’s Office of the Inspector General released a preliminary status report and body-worn camera footage on the officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a 42-year-old African American man on December 21.

According to the report, on Dec. 21, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Connecticut State Police attempted to execute a search warrant for Vaughn Malloy at his Mechanic Street address.

The warrant was issued on June, 20, 2022, for assault charges stemming from a shooting incident that occurred on April 28, 2022 and injured a woman. The gun used in the crime has still not been recovered, police said.

After ongoing surveillance on the Mechanic Street residence, the warrant was executed with assistance from the members of Rhode Island State Police Tactical Unit. While executing the warrant, troopers gave multiple verbal orders for Malloy to leave his home and surrender.

Due to Malloy not complying with police, teams used a battering ram attached to an armored vehicle to breach the front door of the home. Malloy fled the home on foot with a pistol in his hand despite officers demanding him to stop.

A Connecticut State Police canine was deployed and later engaged Malloy. During the engagement, Malloy fired several shots, striking a police cruiser and killing the canine.

The investigation into the incident remains active.
