BOSTON, Mass. (WLNE) — The Sumner Tunnel officially reopened to traffic today at 5 a.m. before the morning commute.

The tunnel had been completely shut down for four weeks, as crews worked on the next phase of the restoration project.

Work included the tunnel roadway, walls, drainage and additional improvements which will increase safety and climate resiliency.

The project is a $160 million investment that began back in April of 2022.

A limited number of weekend closures are still planned for the fall.

At their conclusion, no later than the end of November, the entire project will be complete.
