Both sides of new proposed RIPTA hub speak up on project

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The “Kennedy Plaza Resilience Coalition” says the current parcel being considered by RIPTA in Providence’s I-195 redevelopment district doesn’t work.

The coalition cites accessibility for riders with wheelchairs, walkers and strollers.

Coalition members also claim the potential for increased trip times from the proposed hub and asks lawmakers to focus on the state’s transit master plan to lower carbon emissions.

Officials have said that the hub needs to move because of the congestion that’s caused by so many buses going through downtown.

In a statement a spokeswoman for RIPTA said it is currently only in “phase one” of its work to design a new transit center in Providence and is assessing multiple sites.

The statement went on to say in part, “Our goal is to make informed decisions that prioritize the interests of the community while enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of our transit system.”
