Boyfriend accused of murdering Rehoboth teen held without bail
REHOBOTH, Mass. (WLNE) — A Rehoboth man charged in the murder of his 18-year-old pregnant girlfriend was held without bail after his arraignment Wednesday.
Prosecutors offered chilling new details about what they believed led up to Kylee Monteiro’s death.
They said Gregory Groom confessed to stabbing his girlfriend to death and burying her in the woods behind his home.
Groom was charged with murder and assault and battery on a pregnant victim.
Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn, III, said investigators found remains that appeared to be those of Monteiro in Groom’s backyard off County Street on Aug. 19.
“All of the evidence points to the defendant at this point, as you heard in court, having killed her,” Quinn said.
Prosecutors said it was Groom who initially called police to say that Monteiro was missing, but upon further investigation, detectives uncovered text messages sent from the victim to her sister, which said she had been attacked by Groom.
“Ms. Monteiro texted her sister, ‘He threw me on the ground and pulled my hair and strangled me, my phone is at 4%, and if I die it was Greg,'” the prosecutor said.
The prosecution alleged that Groom admitted he got into an argument with Monteiro behind the shed, stabbed her several times in the neck and chest, and buried her in the woods.
Based on a map drawn by Groom, detectives were able to uncover the spot in the woods where she was buried, which was covered up with brush and trees.
Monteiro’s family did not speak after leaving court, but her sister said on social media they now have some “closure.”
The defense also did not offer any argument in court, and Groom was held without bail.
A vigil for Monteiro is scheduled for Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. at the Redway Plain off Route 44 in Rehoboth.
