Somerset, MASS. (WLNE) – The Brayton Point cooling towers in Somerset are set to come down April 27th.  The former power plant is being redeveloped into the Brayton Point Commerce Center, which will support manufacturing and the offshore wind industry.  Commercial Development Company bought the shut-down plant in January of last year, and they’ve since been cleaning up the site and demolishing buildings.  At a meeting last night, they addressed concerns about the potential impact of imploding those towers.

Commercial Development Company Executive Vice President Steve Collins says, “No, we don’t anticipate that there will be hazardous material that will impact the neighborhoods.  But, we’re going to take additional steps to ensure that it doesn’t, and also to get the community comfortable with the plan.”

During the implosion in April, there will be road closures, including a rolling road block on I-195 near the towers.  The company is also raffling off the chance to push the button to detonate the implosion, benefiting the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Fall River.

Tickets for the raffle are available through the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Wall Committee and through the office of Joe Marshall & Associates. They have been available for pick up as of March 11 at their office located on 982 Eastern Ave, Fall River, MA. You can contact the committee for more information through the website here. You can also contact Joe Marshall at 508-673-3300.
