A Brazilian police official says U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte made up the story about being robbed at gunpoint in Rio de Janeiro.

The official says what actually happened is that Lochte and three fellow swimmers stopped at a gas station in a Rio suburb Sunday morning, and broke the door to an outside bathroom while trying to push it open.

A security guard then confronted them. He was armed with a pistol, but never drew it. According to the official, the gas station manager then arrived and asked the swimmers to pay for the broken door.

They gave him some money and then left. The official says two of the swimmers, who were pulled off a plane yesterday before they could leave for the United States, told police that the robbery story was false.
