Man struck and killed by SUV in Providence

Police identify victim in fatal accident

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- A pedestrian has been killed in a motor vehicle accident in the area of Eastside Marketplace on Pitman Street in Providence.

Providence Police and Fire responded and found 51-year-old Timothy McGann, laying on the street and bleeding from his head.

According to the department, passersbys attempted to help McGann and one witness indicated that he was pulling a shopping cart of groceries when he was struck by an SUV traveling in a northerly direction.

The driver of the SUV told police he saw the shopping cart in the middle of the street and veered left to avoid it, which is when he came into collision with McGann.

Police say McGann was transported to Rhode Island Hospital and pronounced deceased shortly afterward.

The investigation is ongoing.
