WARWICK, R.I. — Police have identified the 70-year-old man that died after being hit by a mini van, and possibly multiple cars, at approximately 7 p.m. Thursday evening.

Authorities say Joseph Phillips, of East Providence, was crossing four lanes of traffic on 139 Jefferson Boulevard after leaving work.

Other cars may have also hit Phillips after the driver of the van pulled over. It is unclear if those drivers knew they had hit the body, but they are wanted for questioning.

“We are looking for anybody who believes they may have been involved in the accident to contact the Warwick Police Department Traffic Unit…Unfortunately, as a result of that accident we do have a male victim who is deceased at the scene,” said Captain Rick Rathbun of the Warwick Police Department.

Officials say the investigation revealed that drugs and alcohol, along with texting/cell phone use, were not factors in the collision on the part of the mini van’s driver.

Warwick Police are urging for witnesses to come forward.

The investigation is ongoing.
