BREAKING: Pedestrian hit and killed in New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD, M.A. – Police have confirmed that a 57-year-old man from Acushnet has been fatally struck by a car in New Bedford.

Authorities say they responded to 120 Cove Street around 5:30 p.m., Thursday evening for the report that a man had been struck while crossing the road.

Witnesses say the unidentified male was meeting his friends at a nearby Chinese restaurant; something he did every week.

Those witnesses also tell ABC6 News they saw the victim in the crosswalk at the time he was hit.  

Police say an unidentified female from New Bedford was driving the vehicle that hit the victim.

The victim was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel.

Cove Street is blocked off to traffic in both directions in the area while police investigate.

The identities of the victim and driver have not been released. 

The New Bedford Police Department and Massachusetts State Police are investigating at this time.
