PORTLAND, Maine (WLNE) — Bridgewater State University said a plane owned by the school flipped over due to wind gusts while on a runway in Maine.

A spokesperson for the school said wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour “extensively damaged” a Cessna 172 at the Portland International Jetport on Tuesday.

No one was in the plane at the time, as the aviation student who flew the plane was in a building at the airport.

The student flew the plane out of New Bedford Regional Airport as part of a Federal Aviation Administration evaluation for a certificate.

The Federal Aviation Administration is expected to inspect the plane and investigate the incident.

The student and plane will be brought back to the university’s aviation program in New Bedford.
