Burrillville Police release bodycam footage from arrest of man accused of pointing a loaded gun at an officer

BURRILLVILLE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Burrillville Police Department has released body camera footage from the arrest of a Burrillville man accused of pointing a loaded gun at an officer’s face while intoxicated. 

40-year-old Nicholas Smith was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm while intoxicated, possession of extended magazines, discharging a firearm within a compact area, simple assault, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.

On July 3, Burrillville police responded to Tarkiln Road for reports of shots fired.

Police said Smith opened the door and allegedly pointed a firearm at an officer’s face, who was able to push it away and disarm him.

Smith was arrested in his doorway.

Police said that Smith showed “obvious signs of heavy intoxication” and was transported to Burrillville Police Headquarters.

Later that day, police executed a search warrant at Smith’s home and found three handguns, three long guns, and 27 extended magazines.

Smith was arraigned at the Burrillville Police Headquarters and released on $10,000 bail.

His formal arraignment is scheduled for July 8.
