Candlelight vigil pays tribute to earthquake victims in Nepal

PROVIDENCE – In the midst of tragedy in Nepal, the Nepalese Association of Rhode Island helped host a candlelight vigil in Providence, to pay tribute to the overwhelming number of victims of Sunday’s earthquake.

Dozens of people gathered in prayer Wednesday night, as the music of Nepal played in the background. It was a chance to mourn together and comfort each other.

“When you have other people sharing and praying, that gives a piece of mind,” explained Om Devkota, head of the Nepalese Association of Rhode Island. “We’re trying to cope as much as we can.”

Around 300 Nepalese live in Rhode Island, according to Devkota. The Johnson and Wales University group Namaste Nepal which hosted the vigil Wednesday night on campus.

Sunday’s earthquake killed more than 5,000 people and left tens of thousands homeless.
