Car seat safety checkup event this weekend
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (WLNE) — September is baby safety month and the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association is hosting two free car safety checks.
The first safety check will be Friday in Foxborough at the Dorel Juvenile in the main parking lot, hosted by Safe Kids RI from 2 p.m. to 6p.m.
The second safety check is Saturday at the UPPAbaby Hub Service Center and showroom in Boston from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
While car seats help reduce the risk of crash injuries overall and can reduce the risk of fatalities by as much as 71 %, mistakes in using car seats can compromise the protection they offer.
Joe Colella, who’s the director of child passenger safety, explained the most important detail when it comes to buckling children in a car seat.
“There is one word I like to use so parents can understand using car seats correctly — the one word is snug,” he said. “Really, when trying to manage crash forces and crash energy, having the car seat snugly and in locked place is best.”
He added that, “I shouldn’t be able to move it with my arm an inch side to side or an inch forward. If I can, something is wrong.”
Each day in the United States, 445 children are injured and three are killed in car crashes, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
