PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Providence leg of the “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” tour is here just in time for the holidays.

Performances of “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” at the Providence Performing Arts Center began on Tuesday and will run until Sunday, Dec. 31.

Fans of the 2001 movie will be familiar with the plot, but the cast said the musical adaption is enhanced with popular songs like Rihanna’s “Diamonds” and Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies.”

“We have songs from all your favorite artists,” said Max Heitmann, who plays Baby Doll.

The cast agreed the story and humor is enjoyable for the whole family. Venue officials recommended the musical for ages 12 and older.

Nicci Claspell, who plays Arabia, said a lot of the pop culture references in the musical version are from the past five to 10 years.

“It’s got a little something for everybody,” she said.

Cast members described the experience as “fun”, “exciting”, and “passionate.”

They said they’re excited to see the city in full holiday swing during this part of their tour.

“If we’re going to be anywhere else but home, I think Providence feels like the right place to be,” Claspell said.
