Central Falls Post Office to renamed after women’s rights, anti-slavery activist
CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (WLNE) — The Central Falls Post Office has been renamed in honor of a local women’s rights and anti-slavery activist.
The new name of the post office is the Elizabeth Buffum Chace Post Office, after the Smithfield native.
Chase was born in 1806 and fought for the women’s rights, prison reform movements, and the abolition of slavery.
Gov. Dan McKee and Rhode Island’s congressional delegation were on hand for the renaming ceremony that took place at 11 a.m. on Dexter Street.
“We should be striving to live our lives like Elizabeth Buffum Chace lived hers. She fought for women’s rights, and she advocated to ensure true equality in our country, we need to advocate as she did,” McKee said during the ceremony.
Members of Buffum-Chace’s family were there as well to accept the plaque and honor her legacy.
