Chihuahua that survived severe accident searching for new home

BOSTON (WLNE) – The MSPCA-Angell said a chihuahua that miraculously survived after being hit by a speeding car in Lawrence, Massachusetts is looking for a new home.
According to the MSPCA, two-year-old Chanel was surrendered to their Boston adoption center in Jamaica Plain after her owners decided her injuries and ongoing care were more than they could handle.
X-rays taken at the Angell Center showed that Chanel had a fractured pelvis and other injuries from being hit.
Veterinarians with the MSPCA say they’re managing her pain with medication and plan to perform surgery in early January to repair her pelvic fractures.
Officials say Chanel will require weeks of care to regain her health and mobility post-surgery, but Mike Keiley, the director of adoption centers and programs at the MSPCA said he feels positively about the young dog’s future.
“Chanel’s one of thousands of pets who’ve passed through our adoption centers in 2023, many of whom required extensive veterinary care before we could place them for adoption,” Keiley said.
“We’re grateful that at this time of year we still have the resources necessary, so that we may place her in a loving adoptive home,” he continued.
The MSPCA found homes for more than 10,500 homeless animals in 2023, an achievement that, according to Keiley, could not have come at a better time with growing concerns of animal euthanasia due to overpopulation at shelters across the country.
“When most other organizations slowed down or completely halted accepting transfers from overcapacity shelters, we stayed the course and even brought more dogs in whenever we had the space to do so,” Keiley added.
Data from Shelter Animals Count shows that the number of animals in shelters at the end of 2023 is 245,000 more than were in shelters at the end of 2022.
The MSPCA will announce Chanel’s availability for adoption in the coming weeks. Anyone who wishes to contribute toward her medical care may do so here.
