Chilly Temps Ideal for Snow Making at Yawgoo Valley

EXETER, R.I. (WLNE) — As most of New England tries to escape the chilly temperatures, Rhode Island’s only ski hill is benefiting from the cold.

Thursday morning, the slopes at Yawgoo Valley were filled with skiers and snowboarders, who didn’t seem to mind the cold.

“I’ve got a hoodie on inside of this jacket,” said snow boarder Jon Lee. “[the cold] really is not so bad actually,” he added.

“We have a lot of die–hards that will come out in any weather,” explained Yawgoo Valley general manager, Tracy Hartman.

“I always tell people just dress for [the cold], dress in layers, stay hydrated,” said Hartman.

“There isn’t much wind right today, so it should be a fine day for skiing. The conditions are awesome,” she added.

While the single digit temps may be harsh on exposed skin, they’re actually ideal conditions for making snow.

“Today is ideal,” said Hartman. “And when we can go around the clock, we can make a lot of snow.”

While many enjoyed their day on the slopes, the cold temps can be dangerous.

When temperatures drop to near-zero, frostbite can occur in less than 15 minutes.
