U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline announces the beginning of the Automatic Voter Registration Act to increase ballot access for qualified voters Monday morning.

U.S. Congressman Cicilline announced on June 15th the act will amend the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 to obligate states to inform people, who give their information to the state motor vehicle authority, they will be automatically registered to vote in the state.

This act will shift the burden of registering to vote from the person to the state so that more qualified voters can have their voices heard easily.

“Today, too many politicians are trying to make it harder than ever for citizens to make their voices heard at the ballot box.” “The Automatic Voter Registration Act will protect the right to vote and expand access for eligible voters across the United States. I thank my colleagues who have co-sponsored this important legislation that helps to expand one of our most essential rights as Americans,” Cicilline said in a statement.

The current Federal statues require the states give the citizens the option to register to vote when they provide information to the motor vehicle registry.
