WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — The City of Woonsocket and Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt announced Tuesday that plans to bring a full service supermarket to the city are in the works.

According to Mayor Baldelli-Hunt, after a year-long collaboration with the National Supermarket Association (NSA), a prospective retailer has been identified, as well as a potential site for the store.

Officials did not release the prospective retailer but said in a release that the former Barry Field property is the potential site for the new supermarket.

The NSA represents the interests of roughly 600 supermarkets in New York and other urban cities along the East Coast and Mid-Atlantic Region and Florida. The association supports entrepreneurs who open mid-sized supermarkets in areas abandoned by large chains.

Mayor Baldelli-Hunt further expressed her excitement at the opportunity to bring a full-service supermarket to Downtown Woonsocket, saying in part, “They will fill a great need, and we will do everything possible to bring them here and help make them successful.”
