Newport, R.I. — “Cliff” the coyote, who is well-known to residents on Aquidneck Island, will be relocated to an area zoo, not euthanized.
Dr. Numi Mitchell head scientist of the Narragansett Bay Coyote Study (NBCS), Councilman John Florez of the Newport City Council, and Chief Anthony Pesare have rescinded the order to employ lethal force in regard to the coyote “Cliff”.
All three will be working together to capture and place Cliff in an area zoo instead.
Authorities say the coyote was getting too comfortable around humans because many people had been feeding him.
One resident petitioned to save Cliff. As of Friday morning, the petition had over 9,000 signatures. However, experts say he is not a pet and is still dangerous.
Cliff has been tagged with a GPS so experts can track and euthanize him.
