Providence Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare is saying city firefighters are reporting more on-the-job injuries and calling in sick more often to intentionally create overtime.

He says the number of firefighters filing injury claims has increased substantially since early August when Mayor Jorge Elorza tried to reorganize shift schedules.

Commissioner Pare calls the timing “highly suspicious”, and says injury claims that were normally below 20 firefighters per week have since risen to 40 per week.

Firefighters Union President Paul Doughty told ABC6 News he had no comment.
